Henry – Five Months

Henry, At five months you….DSC03028

  • Sort of have enough hair to brush and still have a huge bald spot on the back of your head.  Your eyes have officially turned brown.
  • Didn’t gain much weight this last month (13 lb 6 oz and 26 3/4″ long).  You have out grown most of your 0-3 month clothes but are still too skinny for most of your 3-6 month clothes.
  • Have started teething and are not very happy about it.  For the most part I can keep you distracted from the pain during the day.  But some days are worse than others and you can be very whiny and clingy.  Some nights are really bad too.  You’ll wake up in the middle of the night screaming as if someone is sawing your arm off and it will take 2-3 hours to calm you down and get you back to sleep.  At first you didn’t bite on teething toys, just licked them, but now you have it figured out.  You don’t like to chew on anything cold or frozen though.
  • Are transitioning to eating every 3 hours during the day.  You may just want a quick 10 minute snack or you may want to eat for 30-40 minutes.
  • Are all over the place with naps.  I never know when or if you’ll sleep. Sometimes you will cry whenever I lay you down and go 12 hours straight without sleeping.  But usually you take 1-3 short 30 minute naps throughout the day.
  • Still sleep through the night unless you wake up screaming in pain from your teeth.
  • Suck your thumb a lot.  I am glad you are able to comfort yourself.
  • Are no longer content just to look at the world around you.  You want to explore everything and get so frustrated when you can’t reach something or are stuck in one position for too long.
  • Love it when we hold you up in a sitting or standing position and when we lift you up to “fly”.
  • Want to be held so you can see everything that I am doing and touch everything that I’m working on.
  • Enjoy going out on walks and to the store.  You stare in silent wonder at everything around you.
  • No longer want to lounge in your infant seat.  You like to lean forward into a sitting position and try to reach over the side for toys that you have dropped.  Good thing there is a seatbelt to keep you from falling out.
  • Enjoy doing tummy time on the hardwood floor because you can spin around.  You probably feel like your going somewhere.
  • Can pass toys from one hand to the other and try to grasp at small items.
  • Like to play with your feet.  You pull off your socks and chew on your toes.
  • Smile when I magically appear from behind my hands when we play peak-a-boo.
  • Love listening to Dad make funny noises.
  • Hold your arms out when you want to be picked up.
  • Like it when we read “Whoo Loves You?” by Sandra Magsamen and “Red Truck” by Kersten Hamilton.
